Almost all of the survivors had the same mental abilities when they were first treated in hospital. However, after they were released, some of them started experiencing difficulties with their daily activities.

A study conducted in Denmark from 2007 to 2011 revealed that 21% of the survivors experienced moderate mental issues, while 11% of them developed severe mental problems. Out of the 2,504 individuals who participated in the study, two of them went into a coma. The study did not determine how long these patients remained in a coma.

In most cases, people who go into a coma can recover in about two to three weeks. In 2018, guidelines were changed to no longer refer to patients in a coma as permanently vegetative state. Their mental abilities can then improve over time
