The more people spend on Facebook, the less they feel satisfied with their life. According to the self-presentation theory, people tend to manage their identity and image in social contexts. This is because the more people are engaged in customizing their profile, the more they value social currency.

Although it’s possible for users to feel pressure to improve their self-presentation, it’s also possible that teenagers are manipulating their social media platforms to achieve a sense of beauty.

A survey conducted among   teens revealed that almost half of them feel that being liked on social media is important, and many of them agree that being rejected by other people is bad for their self-esteem. This suggests that being rejected online could trigger feelings of emotional pain and dissatisfaction.

Studies suggest that social media can cause people to develop a negative feedback loop regarding their perceived success, which can lead to disordered body perception. Pinterest is also linked to disordered dieting behavior.
